EPIRUS
Administrative Region
Viticulture in Epirus dates back to the 15th century. Although the quantity of production is smaller than in other regions of the country, the quality of the wines remains high. Epirus produces expressive wines from both indigenous and international varieties, with their style standing out. The natural beauty of the region, the rich cultural heritage and the many zones with a marginal climate for viticulture are strong advantages for the promotion and development of a small but dynamic wine production. The region is mainly mountainous, with the exception of a few small lowland areas, and most vineyards are located at an altitude of around 700 meters. The high altitude contributes to the creation of a cool climate and suitable humidity conditions for viticulture. The Ionian Sea to the west moderates the extreme temperatures of summer and the very low temperatures of winter, while the Pindos mountain range acts as a natural barrier to the humid winds from the Adriatic, enhancing rainfall throughout Epirus, without causing problems for winemakers. The soils of the region are mainly clayey with a moderate calcium content, maintaining sufficient moisture throughout the year and often making irrigation unnecessary. In the vineyards located on the slopes of the mountains, the soils are poor and dry, in contrast to the richer soils of the lower areas and plains.
