THESSALY

Administrative Region

Thessaly, located in the center of mainland Greece, has always been an important hub of trade and culture. The local economy is mainly based on agriculture, with most of the land occupied by crops such as grain and cotton, while viticulture was not as widespread, as the above crops were more profitable. The best vineyards are located on the slopes of the surrounding mountains, where the grapes are of higher quality compared to those grown in the Thessalian plain, where the heavy, organic-rich soils favor high yields per acre. Water is abundant, with rivers such as the Pinios used for irrigation, while the snow in the mountains remains until spring.
