SAMOS

Samos Prefecture, North Aegean Region

In Samos, the name “Samos” alone is sufficient to identify the PDO wine, without the need to mention the Muscat variety. The Muscat White variety occupies approximately 95% of the island's 18,000 hectares of vineyards and is mainly used for the production of the famous Samian sweet wine. The vineyards extend throughout the island, with an emphasis on the northern side, between Karlovasi and Samos town. The soil is mainly granitic and schistose, poor in nutrients, neutral and well-drained, while the vineyards are cultivated on terraces with a north orientation. The climate is typically Mediterranean, while the altitude differences are significant, as the vineyards extend from the lowlands to 800-900 m. (mountain vineyards). These differences in altitude affect the aromatic characteristics of the grapes, with the most typical samples often coming from the semi-mountainous areas.
