LEMNOS

Lesvos Prefecture, North Aegean Region

Lemnos, the second most important wine-producing region of the northern Aegean, has mainly volcanic, arid and light soils, with a high presence of limestone. The vineyards of Muscat of Alexandria are located mainly in the hilly western areas and along shallow valleys of the island. The total area of the vineyards reaches approximately 5,000 acres, with 90-95% covered by Muscat of Alexandria, while the rest is planted with the traditional Greek red variety Limnio, known in the region as Kalampaki. The Limnio variety acquired its name from the island, as when it was transported outside of Lemnos it became known by its origin. The harvest in Lemnos usually takes place around mid-September, with slight deviations depending on the conditions of each year.
