LASSITHI

Lassithi Prefecture, Crete Region

The main wine-growing zone of Lassithi is focused on its northeastern part, around the area of Sitia. The vineyard of Sitia is one of the oldest vineyards in Greece and is distinguished by the wealth of indigenous varieties. At low altitudes, at the foot of Mount Ornos near the city and on the coast of the Cretan Sea, the red varieties Liatiko and Mandilaria are mainly cultivated. Further south, on the plateau of Ziros and at altitudes reaching up to 1,000m, the white varieties Vilana and Thrapsathiri grow, ending up on the coast of the Libyan Sea. The soils are mainly limestone, while the vineyards are cultivated according to the traditional cup formation.
