DRAMA & KAVALA
Drama & Kavala Prefectures, East Macedonia Region
Although neither Drama nor Kavala has an official PDO zone, the two regions are among the most important wine-producing regions in Greece. Many pioneering winemakers are active there, who have created some of the most interesting and quality wines in the country. In the wider Kavala region, the mild and humid climate prevailing in the valley and the hilly areas between the sea coastline and Mount Pangaio, combined with the deep and fertile soils, offered ideal conditions for the successful cultivation of early international white varieties. Sauvignon Blanc plays a dominant role, while Chardonnay and Semillon have also yielded excellent results. The systematic and careful viticulture of local producers, a region with a long tradition in table grapes, has also been decisive. In contrast, in Drama, which is located northwest of Kavala and is characterized by a drier and warmer climate, the international red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah have mainly thrived. At the same time, Assyrtiko, the exquisite white variety of the Cyclades, also showed excellent adaptation, which in the conditions of Northern Greece acquired a second place of establishment, yielding more aromatic and refined wines. The vineyard of Drama and Kavala is entirely linear, is among the most modern and well-organized in the country and, in its vast majority, is irrigated.
