LAKONIA

Lakonia Prefecture, Peloponnese Region

During the Middle Ages, Laconia was one of the most important wine-growing regions in Greece, but until recently it had not developed to the level of other regions of the Peloponnese. Monemvasia, the historic medieval port of Laconia, was for centuries known as the birthplace of the famous Malvasia wine, although its exact style and the varieties from which it was produced remain uncertain. Today, the region cultivates an impressively large number of varieties, with producers working systematically to highlight the potential of Laconia, as evidenced by the revival of the local white variety Kydonitsa. The creation of the PDO Monemvasia-Malvasia zone in 2010 for sweet wines is also an indication of the progress of the region and Greek winemaking in general. The Monemvasia variety dominates these white sweet wines, while the remaining percentage is covered by Assyrtiko, Asproudes and Kydonitsa.
