TRIKALA

Trikala Prefecture, Thessaly Region

The Trikala region, although located in the Thessaly plain, has a strong mountainous character, as it is surrounded by the mountains of Tzoumerka, Hasia and Lakmos. The main vineyards are located northwest of the city, at relatively high altitudes. On the left bank of the Pinios River, the impressive rocks of Meteora and the historic monasteries dominate. Although in the past the Monasteries possessed extensive vineyards, today cultivation remains limited. The effort to revive viticulture led to the creation of the Meteora PGI in 2006, with plantings steadily increasing. Both indigenous and international varieties are cultivated in the vineyards, with an emphasis on the red Limniona, which is the focus of many winemaking efforts.
