Brief Note
The PDO Amyndeon zone, established in 1972, is located in the southeastern part of the regional unit of Florina. Specifically, it mainly covers the plateau around Amyndeon and the settlements of Agios Panteleimon, Kleidi, Xino Nero, Petres, Rodonas and Fanos, as well as the areas of Aetos (Aetos, Agrapidies, Anargyroi, Pedino), Filotas (Antigonos, Vegora, Levea – formerly Lakkia, Maniaki) and Varikos. The area extends at an altitude of 570 to 750 meters. This plateau is surrounded by three large mountains: Vermio (2052 m), Vitsi (2128 m) and Vora or Kaimaktsalan (2554 m).
Two lakes are particularly important for the shaping of the area: the large Lake Vegoritida in the northeast, shared between Florina and Pella, and the smaller Lake Petron, in the center of the plateau. A key feature of the area is the sandy soils, which allow the existence of many autochthonous and relatively old plants. The Amyntaio PDO zone is the northernmost of the four PDO zones that include the Xinomavro variety (the other three are Goumenissa, Naoussa and Rapsani) and has the highest average altitude, approximately 615 meters.
Xinomavro is deeply connected to the Amyntaio region and is used for the production of both red and rosé wines. The special microclimate of the plateau favors the production of these types of wine, which constitute the majority of local production. In fact, Amyntaio is the only area in Greece that produces PDO rosé wine.
