Types of wine produced

GRAPE VARIETY

Xinomavro
Negosca (minimum 20%)

Wine-producing Zone On the southeastern slopes of Mount Paiko (altitude 1650 m.), at the southwestern edge of the prefecture of Kilkis, the PDO Goumenissa zone extends, which was established in 1979. The zone mainly includes the area of Goumenissa (with the settlements of Goumenissa, Gerakonas, Griva, Karpi, Pentalofos, Stathis and Filyria), as well as parts of the areas of Axioupolis (Gorgope) and Evropou (Polypetro). According to the legislation, the vineyards must be located at an altitude of at least 150 meters, which limits the spread of the zone. In practice, most vineyards are located along the Karpi – Goumenissa – Filyria axis.

The PDO Goumenissa is the smallest of the four zones where Xinomavro is grown (the others are Amyntaio, Naoussa and Rapsani). The presence of the Negoska variety (at least 20%) differentiates the character of the region’s wines. Specifically, Negoska adds softness to the flavor angles of Xinomavro, increases the intensity of the color and enhances the alcoholic strength.
