Paros is an Aegean island of intense natural beauty, and its center is dominated by the mountain of Prophet Elias (726 meters above sea level). Most of the island’s vineyards are planted on the low
slopes around this mountain, taking advantage of the microclimates and soil of the
area. The vines are old and autochthonous, that is, they have not been grafted onto
rootstocks, something rare and valuable for the quality and continuity of the crop.
Phylloxera, which has destroyed many vineyards in Greece and the world, has not
spread significantly on Paros, thus keeping these old vineyards alive.
The entire island has been designated as the PDO Paros production
zone, established in 1981, and covers both white and red wines. This means that the
whole of Paros is considered by the Greek authorities as a suitable and authentic
production area for these wines. However, the large-scale tourism and increased
residential development on the island have limited the area of vineyards. This means
that grape cultivation is not as extensive as it used to be, resulting in winemaking
facing production constraints.
Paros combines tradition and natural beauty with
old, indigenous plantings that give wines with character, authenticity and
complexity. The “secret” of the red PDO Paros is the participation of white
Monemvasia that gives the red wines a softer structure and balance — something
rare in Greek red wines. Monemvasia, beyond its local importance, also has a
historical dimension, linked to the famous Malvasia, a wine that was loved and
exported all over the world since the time of Venetian rule.
