The PDO Malvasia Paros was established in 2011 and covers the island of Paros and
Antiparos, two Aegean islands that have a tradition of growing the Monemvasia variety.
The highest quality vineyards are located around the mountain of Profitis Ilias,
at an altitude of 250 to 400 meters, where the climatic conditions (dew, sunshine, wind)
are ideal for the ripening of the grapes that will become sweet wines.
Monemvasia has a long tradition associated with the famous “Malvasia” – the sweet wine
that was very popular and was exported from the port of
Monemvasia in the Peloponnese. The name “Malvasia” was traditionally and
generally used to describe a style of sweet wine, and was therefore produced in
many parts of the Aegean, such as Paros and Crete. The institution of the PDO
Malvasia Paros officially recognizes this tradition and allows the sweet aged wines of
Paros to stand out and be protected as an authentic and quality product.
