The Anchialos Protected Designation of Origin zone, officially recognized in 1971,
extends over an area of low hills to the northwest and west of the Pagasetic Gulf, in
the regional unit of Magnesia. The bulk of the vineyards are located in the area of
Nea Anchialos and the surrounding villages of Aidini and Mikrotheves, while a
smaller area is occupied by the Almyros area (mainly in the village of Krokio).
The viticultural activity in the region was significantly strengthened after the settlement
of refugees from Asia Minor, who brought their knowledge of grape cultivation and
wine production. They settled mainly in Nea Anchialos, Aidini and Mikrothebes,
where even today most of the vineyards are preserved. The Roditis variety, which
dominates the PDO Anchialos zone, is widespread throughout Greece and appears
with a variety of clones and local names. In addition to Anchialos, it also participates
in the PDO Patras and Melitona Slopes zones. Savvatiano, which also participates in
the blend, is mainly found in eastern Central Greece (Attica, Boeotia, Evia).
