Types of wine produced

Sweet white from sun-dried grapes

Sweet white fortified

GRAPE VARIETY

100% Muscat of Alexandria

In the northern Aegean, on the island of Limnos, the white variety Muscat of
Alexandria is cultivated extensively, creating high-quality wines bearing the PDO
Muscat of Limnos label, established in 1971. Although the legislation covers the
entire island, the best vineyards of Muscat of Alexandria are spread mainly in the
central and southern part, in areas such as Atsiki, Moudros and Nea Koutali, where
they are protected from the cool northern winds, which favors the healthy and
balanced ripening of the grapes.

The sweet wines of the PDO Muscat of Limnos are
distinguished into naturally sweet (vin naturellement doux), derived from sun-dried
grapes, and naturally sweet fortified wines (vin doux naturel or vin de liqueur). In
fact, producers who use grapes from privately owned vineyards with low per hectare
yield can characterize their product as “from selected vineyards” (grand cru), giving
additional prestige and quality.
