PDO MUSCAT OF RHODES

Types of wine produced

Sweet White from sun-dried grapes

Sweet White fortified

GRAPE VARIETY

Muscat White
Muscat di Trani

In Rhodes, the cultivation of Muscat white and Muscat di Trani vines is limited and
scattered on small areas, mainly in the areas of Archangelos, Ataviros (Emponas,
Monolithos), Afantos, Kameiros (Apollona, Fanes) and Kallithea (Psinthos). The PDO
Muscat of Rodos zone is clearly smaller in area and less cohesive than the zones of
the Athiri and Amorgiano varieties of the PDO Rhodes. Muscat white, in addition to
Rhodes, also participates in four other Greek PDO wines, while Muscat di Trani is a
clone that was introduced from Italian Puglia during the period of Italian occupation
of the Dodecanese. However, its cultivation has decreased significantly today, with
very few vineyards remaining. Dessert wines labeled “Moschatos Rodou” can be
either naturally sweet (vin naturellement doux, from sun-dried grapes) or naturally
sweet (vin doux naturel, fortified). When produced from grapes from privately
owned vineyards with a low yield per acre, they may bear the additional label “from
selected vineyards” (grand cru).
