GRAPE VARIETY

100% Muscat White

Year of establishment: 1971
Location: Gulf of Corinth, east of Patras and Rio, in the regional unit of Achaia. It
mainly includes areas of Rio (Agios Vasileios, Agios Georgios, Ano & Kato Kastritsi,
Argyra, Bernardeika, Drepano, Platani, Rio, Psathopyrgos) and a small area in the NE
part of Patras.

Characteristics

The zone is smaller than that of the PDO Muscat of Patras and largely coincides with
the eastern part of the latter. Producers can produce wines labeled “from selected
vineyards” (grand cru) if they use grapes from privately owned vineyards with low
yields per acre. The proximity to the city of Patras and residential development have
reduced the cultivated area. Despite the restriction, some of the best Greek white
sweet wines are produced here. The impressive view of the Rio-Antirio Bridge adds a
special identity to the zone.
