The Slopes of Meliton PDO zone, established in 1982, is located on the Sithonia peninsula, the middle “leg” of Halkidiki, and extends along the western slopes of Mount Meliton (altitude 811 m.), near the Neos Marmaras area. It is the first Protected Designation of Origin in Greece to include foreign varieties in the composition of its wines – something that was followed by the PDO Mesenikolas several years later (in 1994).

The red wine of the PDO Plagies Melitona zone is one of the two Greek PDO wines that include the Limnio variety – one of the oldest Greek varieties, known since antiquity as “limnia stafyli”, as mentioned by Polydeuces. The variety has its roots in Lemnos, where it is today called Kalampaki. It is worth noting that the PDO Plagies Melitona wines are produced exclusively by a private winery, which has undertaken the cultivation and winemaking in the area.
