ACHAIA
Achaia Prefecture, Peloponnese Region
Achaia is one of the largest wine-growing regions in Greece in terms of production volume. Its vineyards include the slopes of Aigialeia, which are considered among the most impressive vineyards in the country. These vineyards are spread on gentle northern slopes and receive the cool winds of the Gulf of Corinth, which protect them from the intense summer heat (coastal vineyards). The altitudes range between 250 and 850 meters, while the soils are varied – from limestone to sandy loam, with good drainage. The temperate climate, combined with the ravines full of vegetation and the small rivers that flow into the sea, favor the gentle ripening of the red variety Roditis, producing particularly aromatic white wines. In western Achaia, in the areas around Patras, the altitude is lower (450-500 m.), as a result of which Roditis ripens earlier and gives fuller and richer wines. In the lowlands of Patras, the red Mavrodaphne also thrives, which is used for the production of the famous fortified wine, while in the lowland coastal areas of Patras and Rio, the cultivation of Muscat Aspros dominates.
