IONIAN ISLANDS

Ionian Sea Complex of Islands

Despite the fact that almost all the Ionian islands maintain a long tradition in wine production, Kefalonia stands out as a pioneer, offering the most well-known and quality products. The other Ionian islands also have remarkable wines: Zakynthos is famous for the traditional Verdea Wine, produced since the 19th century, while the presence of the red variety Avgoustiatis is also significant. In Corfu, although it is the largest island in terms of area, the oenological interest is limited, with the dominant varieties being the white Kakotrygi and the red Petrokorinthos. In Lefkada, the Vertzami variety occupies most of the vineyards, is late and at high altitudes has difficulty completing its maturation, thus delaying the accumulation of sugars.
