KARDITSA

Karditsa Prefecture, Thessaly Region

In the Karditsa region, near the artificial lake Plastiras, the vineyards of Mesenikolas extend, on slopes with an eastern orientation and an altitude reaching 700 m. (semi-mountainous and mountainous vineyards). The unique Greek red variety Mavro Mesenikola is cultivated there, which is combined with international varieties such as Syrah and Carignan at a rate of approximately 30%, to enhance the color and structure of the wines. The vineyards are small-scale, traditionally planted in cups, with some newer linear plantings. The mild microclimate of the area, a result of both the altitude and the influence of the lake (lakeside vineyards), allows Mavro Mesenikola to ripen in late September, producing wines with a special character.
