KEFALONIA
Island of Ionian Islands Region
The vineyards of Kefalonia occupy approximately 3,000 acres and are mainly grown in traditional, low bowls, up to 800 m. on the western slopes of Mount Ainos (mountainous and semi-mountainous vineyards). In these, the unique white variety Robola is cultivated, which thrives in the poor limestone soils of the mountainous and semi-mountainous southern and central areas of the island. In the past, Robola was cultivated as an autochthonous vine, but after the invasion of phylloxera in Kefalonia in 1988, grafting on anti-phylloxera rootstocks began. At lower altitudes, the red Mavrodaphne is also cultivated for the production of the homonymous liqueur and the White Moschato.
